1129 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Ed.{J. L. Edwards}5/MH.{M. Huckerby} Dr. J.C.Morrison, The University, Glasgow. 2nd. September 1937. Dear Dr. Morrison, Many thanks for your letter of the 31st. August, and the additional information therein. Dealing with this first, the main objections I can see to a slow opening exhaust valve are that to obtain the same area under the valve lift curve the valve will have to be opened earlier, and this has a bad effect on tick over. We may find, however, that in the event of the advantages from the silence point of view being proven, that a slight drop in valve lift would be justified. This would, of course, reduce the power output slightly, but in view of other factors the compromise might be justified. As you have guessed, Mr. Robotham has handed on your report, and I am trying out your scheme as soon as possible, probably within the next fortnight. I must say that it seems very reasonable, and I am quite hopeful of good results. We shall naturally try both your suggestions with one and two rear silencers. There is not much more I can say just now except that you seem to have got a lot done in quite a short time. As soon as we have any results I'll let you know. Yours sincerely, for ROLLS - ROYCE LTD. | ||
