To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from AJS. c. to BJ. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X8300 AJS2/M16. 7. 26. EAC. CLUTCH OPERATING SHAFT LUBRICATOR. X.8300 X.8980 We send herewith LeC.2264 shewing a method of lubricating the off-side bearing of clutch operating shaft in place of the scheme previously used, of putting some oil into the end of the shaft itself, which scheme Mr. Royce thinks inconvenient to use. The point we particularly wish reported upon with this scheme is whether the oil will always reach the bearing satisfactorily by traversing the milled groove in the spindle. We would ask you to note that we do not ask for the groove to be of any special curvature, and only consider that it should have sufficient width, and extend far enough in plan view to catch the oil when the shaft is in any of the angular positions that it is likely to be due to clutch wear, and reach far enough into the bearing to carry out where it is wanted.
