HA/SB{Mr Bull/Mr Bannister}12/HR3-4-33. We have seen a copy of MK4/HK{Col. T. Harker - Sales}31-3-33. Will the next exhaust pipe you propose to supply extend rearwards of the back cross tube of the chassis? In any case we suggest, before the pipe is actually supplied, you may care to have a word with Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} who recently made some tests in conjunction with JLE.{J. Lee Evans - Chassis Test Manager} on a new car with an elongated tail here in London with a view to determining the value of an elongated exhaust pipe. We understand these tests shewed that carrying the exhaust pipe rearwards of the back cross tube makes no difference, so much so that it has been agreed that in future we shall cease to provide exhaust pipes which extend rearwards of the cross tube unless there are very peculiar circumstances which demand it. We also believe the tests definitely established that, with a following wind, exhaust fumes may become unpleasant to the occupants of the car if the windows be opened or the side curtains down, regardless of the length of the exhaust pipe. We anticipate we are going to have some difficulty in recovering the cost of a new pipe from the customer or Coachbuilder, so we should like to know whether you are convinced it will improve matters before it is supplied.
