Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}/Mcr18/L14814. Re Ferodo Brake Liners & Ribbed Brake Drums. X.719 J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 14-8-14. R.{Sir Henry Royce} We give below Mr Platford's report By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} on the above brake contained in his memo Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}9/W12814 :- re 58NA{Mr Nadin} Ma. "As regards the test Mr Royce instructs, I have done this, and certainly the first impression is that this brake is very "satisfactory; it is effective, reliable and "quiet and smooth in action. "I made a test, however, of what the "brakes would stand under rough use, i.e. "coming down a long Alpine Pass, and after "driving the car round the track for two laps, "with the brakes on, working against the "engine on direct drive 20 m.p.h. the brakes "became practically useless, the pedal "coming against the floorboard. "After cooling down, the brakes again "became quite normal, and as before. In "view of this point, I do not think we should "recommend same as they are. I do not think "we can expect customers to be satisfied "with cars which, when the brakes have been "in use for any length of time as above they "become unsatisfactory. "The action certainly appears to be "due to the fact, as Mr Royce has already "explained, of expansion of the drums and "I take it that Mr Royce's suggestion for "wider brake drums etc. are now being put "through to overcome this trouble, which, if "such is the case, I have every confidence "in recommending as standard, if the Exp. "Dept. find that they are quite satisfactory "as regards wear and tear. p. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} R | ||
