Dear Sir

With the valued co-operation of your technical staff at Derby, and Mr.Robotham in particular, we have for some months been engaged in developing a new motor car tyre of the highest grade which, apart from the obvious requirement of first-class wear, is being produced essentially to give silent running and superior road-holding, particularly on corners. Your people at Derby are interested and are encouraging, and we have valued highly their assistance.

Now the question arises as to the name for the new tyre. Frankly we would like to call it the "Avon Phantom" but we could not possibly consider the use of this name unless it were with your approval. We are, therefore, asking for your kind permission to use the word "Phantom" which we feel, and your own technical people agree, admirably describes the tyre.

We hope very much you will view this suggestion favourably and that we may have the pleasure of hearing from you in due course, for which we thank you in anticipation.

Yours faithfully,
THE AVON INDIA RUBBER COMPANY LTD.

Joint General Manager.
