COPY. Wm. BUTLER & CO (BRISTOL) LIMITED., Head Office, St.{Capt. P. R. Strong} Phillips, BRISTOL. June 7th. 1919. "Charnwood" Cotham Park, BRISTOL. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., Derby. Dear Sirs, I confirm telephoning you to say that my Rolls-Royce has been in collision. The side frame on one side has been set in about half inch and other side set out the same amount at the cross frame carrying the back end of the gear box. I have had the body and all coach work taken off by the local Coachbuilders, who have recently re-winged and done up the car, and I propose to let my chauffeur drive the chassis up to Derby on Thursday next, unless the letter your man said he would write to-day countermands this instruction. The car has had a bad shake up, as she was run into sideways and knocked half way across a road ( the coach work being very badly damaged) so that it will be necessary to thoroughly strip the car and line everything up again. I think it will be thoroughly worth while telling your Inspector of the Experimental Department to see the engines opened. These cylinders have not been off or cleaned by any means at all, that is de-carbonised in any shape or form since the car was overhauled by you, which is now some seven or eight years ago, the date of course you will be able to verify. The car has been run entirely on Benzole except for a very short time during the worst of the War period when I used Solvent naptha. As the writer's firm are members of the National Benzole Company this Company would consider it a great value if you would on arrival of the engine take a brake test and give a thorough report as to what you consider the condition of the engine is after seven or eight years running on Benzole without cleaning.
