Illustration above shows three sizes of the Air-Maze, for large, medium and small cars, each about 1/4 actual size. To the left is the Air-Maze with top unclamped. Note baffling effect of screen. See enlarged section on opposite page. Add-Index Company plant, Grand Rapids, Michigan, subsidiary of the American Can Company, where the Air-Maze is manufactured. Illustration to the right shows section of Air-Maze greatly enlarged. Air-Maze Principle is Not a New Invention. It is Time Tried and Accepted as the Simplest and Most Efficient Air Cleaning Element in All Industrial Work The inventor of the AIR-MAZE, Mr. O.{Mr Oldham} V.{VIENNA} Greene, of Cleveland, Ohio, has an established reputation as a leading and progressive engineer in the scientific air filtration field. He has devoted many years in research, study and experiments. His work has led him naturally into contact, and he has consequently investigated and experimented with every recognized, and many new, schemes for air filtration. It was while engaged professionally upon an unusually difficult problem in gas-cleaning for one of the important steel corporations that his experiments revealed the principle upon which the present AIR-MAZE for motor cars is founded. This principle, which he has spent the last five years in perfecting, is established and recognized as the most successful filter ever devised for cleaning the gases in blast furnaces, for compressors, for hospitals, public buildings, for paint and varnish rooms, for photographic and dry plate plants—wherever clean air, without appreciable air restriction, is necessary. How the Air-Maze Cleans the Air The AIR-MAZE has the highest efficiency, practically 100%, and the lowest resistance to the flow of air of any of the cleaning devices on the market, irrespective of type. Owing to the scientific construction of the AIR-MAZE which increases in density from the outside to the inside, the resistance increases very slowly as the dust builds up on the wires of the maze. As the name implies, the AIR-MAZE is a uniformly dense maze—consisting of alternate layers of flat and crimped wire screen, of relatively coarse mesh, one layer of crimped wire placed between a flat layer, and offset to the crimped wire of the opposite layer. The dust and grit ladened air passing through the screens in sequence, is divided and redivided into a great number of small streams of uniform size. The small streams are uniformly baffled, thus causing them to swirl and impinge upon the wire of the maze. The velocity of the air is so controlled as to compel the dust particles to attach themselves to and build up on the wire, in exactly the manner of a honeycomb. The larger particles, of course, drop off the wire from the impact, and the small, very small and infinitesimal particles, the real trouble makers, cling to and build up on the structure. This is not a mere theory, but a demonstrated fact, proven by the most exacting tests and under the most trying conditions—conditions which will seldom, if ever, be met with in actual practice. The question is sometimes asked whether, under certain very bad conditions, the AIR-MAZE will not become so laden with dust, dirt and grit and the oily vapor usually present under the hood of the motor car, as to cause restriction to the air intake. We guarantee, positively, that the AIR-MAZE cannot become so clogged as to cause any trouble. When the maze becomes extremely coated, which is seldom, because of the larger particles falling off from the impact, the jar and jolt of the car due to uneven road surfaces, or back-fire of motor will cause excess accumulation to drop off. Therefore, we make the unqualified statement, that the AIR-MAZE will never cause the owner any trouble from any source whatsoever. He May Install It and Forget It with the assurance that no dust, grit, dirt, the most minute particles, nor the little flint-like crystals suspended in the air, will ever get through to the reciprocating parts of his motor. It is simply impossible to get anything but absolutely clean air through the AIR-MAZE to the carburetor. | ||
