STEEL ARTILLERY WHEELS. X.4586 X.9820
DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} is just about completing the artillery wheel hub and fixing for EAC.3. and other 40/50s.
In this particular application there is very little modification to the standard Sankey type wheel, and with it we have adopted a rather novel application of the Michelin wheel fixing. The novelty refers to the use of a separate self adjusting washer for each of the studs. It is assumed that when the tightening of the 6 nuts is complete the friction created is sufficient to carry all the loads, namely, that due to the weight of the car, that due to the drive, and that due to the brakes.
If on test this should prove satisfactory this self adjusting washer system, which is my suggestion, should I think constitute a patentable feature.
The object of using the Michelin left and right hand thread spherical nut is for the sake of rendering the nuts self locking.
Since finishing the above we have made a trial design of the present wire wheel style of Dunlop hub, and find we can make this satisfactory by having suitable new hubs, etc. and again the steel artillery wheel is not much altered from the ordinary standard.
