For the attention of Mr. Barker.

Dear Sirs,

When we use your black or white thrust springs in the 10A clutch, in conjunction with "rubber" facings, we find that most of them become choc-a-bloc before the pressure plate is fully released. We should be glad of your comments and recommendations on this point. At the moment we are using springs made by ourselves of smaller gauge wire, but these are rather highly stressed.

We feel that if we are to use "rubber" facings there is a very good case for a ventilated clutch and are pushing ahead with a suitable clutch housing. In the meantime we should like you to send us two sets of cream springs for the 10A6 type of clutch. An official order follows.

We are not yet out of trouble with the Phantom III clutch. The present standard type, whilst a great improvement over the original design from the point of view of facing strength, still shows a tendency to spread after hard service. Furthermore, the take-up is not so smooth as we should like, and is definitely bad in certain cases. We are experimenting with one or two different plates, hoping to get an improvement.

Yours faithfully,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED.
