Re: CHASSIS 3.AZ.20 - CONTINENTAL TRIALS CAR
Phantom III Brake Drums.
(Total mileage: 24.486 Kms.)

--------------------------------

Upon removing the brake drums from the above chassis in order to attend to the brakes which were poor and uneven in action, we found them to be very badly scored, especially the front ones.

We note from your memo Rd/SB{Mr Bull/Mr Bannister}2I/HR.15.4.37 re "Phantom III brake drums" that the internal diameter of the drums should not exceed 16.050" after being skimmed out. Upon measuring up the front drums, some of the score marks exceed the above figure and in the rear drums the score marks have a depth approaching the above figure.

We consider that the front drums are scrap and that the rear ones can be skimmed out to a diameter slightly under 16.050" and be kept as a stand by.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer}

As the above car is at times sent on very long trips on the Continent for demonstration purposes, it is absolutely necessary that the brakes should be in a first class condition. We are therefore fitting a set of new drums (which we have recently received from the Works) to the front and rear.

We are at the same time fitting a set of S.5895 zinc bonded liners and latest type flat headed copper rivets to replace the original brass bonded ferodo liners and countersunk brass headed rivets.

Please let us know if you would like us to return one or both front drums to you for examination.
