Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd., Date 23.4.29. Page 2 It is possible that although we have supported the glass tube holder at the top and bottom in rubber rings, there is insufficient clearance for these holders at some point in the sand-cast bodies which we are at present using, and therefore the holder of the glass tube may be subjected to a continual strain, which we have been endeavouring to avoid in these particular instruments. We are sending under separate cover, for your inspection, one of the tubes before the glass tube holders are cemented on to it. You will notice that we have already adopted the practice of roughing the tube with emery, to assist the cement in making a good joint. It has been found by experience that this roughing must not be taken too deep, otherwise it would weaken the glass tube, and consequently result in breakage. So that this car may not be without a gauge, we are sending you within the next two days, another instrument for 180 installation, which we should be obliged if you would send on to them, and get them to return the other two. We are making a slight alteration in the leading of the flexible tube which leads from the top glass tube holder, and we think that this alteration will preclude any strain from being imposed on the top joint, if the trouble | ||
