re. AMERICAN ALTERATIONS.

With reference to your BJ3/H28.9.23, I do not feel that we can attempt to prevent Springfield from going ahead with the alterations as long as R.{Sir Henry Royce} has given them permission. This I feel is the definite understanding they have had as arranged by CJ. and I feel sure we shall only cause trouble and ill feeling by trying to do otherwise.

In discussing the matter with R.{Sir Henry Royce} I am sure he is quite clear that in signing these sheets [text 'they are' is crossed out] carrying on such work and turning out cars [text 'withthese' is crossed out] alterations on, andin giving his consent he has kept [handwritten word 'not' inserted above] before him the fact that such alterations, even though, the best they can do, should not seriously do us harm, if not entirely satisfactory. At the same time he is anxious that before we fully condone such action as being our universal standard, it should be confirmed or tested out, or improved on by ourselves before being finally standardised.

My advise is that we should allow Springfield to act entirely on the wording of the instructions contained in R's memos.
