Gun 2L HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}11/JMS/25.7.40. 40 m/m Gun Barrels. We went to Sheffield today to English Steel Corporation to check up on the delivery date for the 40 m/m barrel forgings. They had forged 40 of the 60, but stated that 10 days were necessary for the barrels to cool, and heat treatment and testing would occupy a further 10 days at the absolute minimum so that they could not deliver the barrels until August 12th. They allege that putting the second 30 barrels in with the first 30 delayed the job a week. We find it difficult to believe this, but even if it is so, they should have informed us, and we should have then told them to go ahead with the first 30 barrels. However, they have promised to deliver them direct to the Ordnance Factory by road on the 12th. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} | ||
