RE: BENTLEY CHASSIS, CLUTCH, GEARBOX OR TRANSMISSION RATTLE.

-------------------------------------

C. has asked me to obtain your views in connection with two complaints which we have simultaneously on Bentley chassis of clutch judder on starting the cars from rest which seems either to throw up, or to be due to slackness in some part of the transmission such as the gearbox.

The two cases in question are -

B-155-AE. G.T.Crombie Esq. of Aberdeen, about which Claud Hamilton have written to us expressing the owner's dissatisfaction and requesting the immediate attention of F.D.Reid, which we are trying to arrange.

B-63-AE Captain S. Van Neck, Chief Constable of NORFOLK, - an owner well-known to us, who not only brought this complaint to the notice of Hb.{C. E. Harcombe} and Vl.{V. Lewis / Mr Valentine} on the 20th. inst. when they tried the car with him, but has since called on me personally to explain that it is a most unsatisfactory feature which is being commented on by everyone who accompanies him in the car.

We gather that in both cases, when the car is warm, it is impossible to start the car in second speed without experiencing this juddering and in the case of B-63-AE it is mentioned in Vl{V. Lewis / Mr Valentine}'s report (B.15) of the 25th - copy of which you will have at W. that the juddering can also be noticed when starting in first speed.

Will you please look into the matter and let me have some suggestions as to what should be done for C. as we particularly want to deal with these complaints in their early stages and before they are "bruited" about.

Capt. Van Neck, for instance, mentioned that both Kelvill Davis & March and Jack Barclay Ltd., agreed that they had experienced the same trouble.
