WEAR ON VALVE STEMS ON GUIDES. ------------------------------ We have written the Works suggesting that it will be necessary, in our opinion, to lapp the inside of the valve guides before putting same into service. This should be done by a rotating spindle having end movement as well as rotational movement. By this scheme we think that we should obtain a polished surface on the valve guide which in combination with the carefully polished spindle, should materially affect the issue. In regard to your further point, possibly Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} would make a special point of having valve guides of the hardness specified on our drawings, lapped out in this manner, on the four wheel brake cars before they start on their 10,000 miles trial run. In regard to the addition of covers over the valve guides, we are in communication with BJ. on this point, and are prepared to produce the necessary drawings with the information supplied from America, to enable us to get ahead rather than wait receipt of a finished cylinder from Springfield.
