1129 COPY FOR FILES. To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Ed.{J. L. Edwards} Typed 30.3.39. SINGLE CYLINDER WORK. The above unit is to be converted as soon as possible to incorporate a modified valve gear with standard fixed cams. It is also proposed to increase the bore to 3.500" both for standard B.III heads and B.60 heads. A general programme of work is as follows:- (1) Investigation into the limits of the bump crown piston as regards clearances and compression ratio. (2) Investigation into various shapes of bump on the piston in conjunction with the B.60 head. (3) Correlation of static air flows with volumetric efficiency and power curves, and also an attempt to be made to line single cylinders and main engines on these lines. Porting efficiency to be investigated. (4) Valve seat and exhaust temperature tests to be carried out. (5) Flow tests for coolant using contact couples and investigating the effect of coolant circulation on gasket burning. (6) Effect of reduced valve lift on power output. (7) Investigation of rate of pressure rise in High Power unit as compared with the conventional unit. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Ed.{J. L. Edwards} | ||
