To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from AJS. c. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} X8380 AJS1/M6.6.25. 'W' SERIES WITH STEEL BODY FRAME (S-PK) - GEARBOX. X.9770 X.8310 X.8380 Mr. Royce points out that in try the car a few days ago the change gear mechanism gave a very bad impression that its lever seemed to stick in the neutral position until excessive force had been applied, causing bad and uncomfortable gear changing. When we instructed the plunger mechanism on LeC.1908 we shewed two depths of plunger grooves in sliders to be tried. We are under the impression that on some previous occasion when a car came to WW. having the particular mechanism referred to, and also exhibiting the same fault, that we mentioned to you the two depths of groove for trial. Are we to take it that the gearbox on this underframe car tried by R.{Sir Henry Royce} a few days ago had the shallow groove, in which case they still require modification, or was the car fitted with a box having deep groove sliders. In the case of the former will you please still further lessen the spring load and slot depths, until reasonable plunger action is assured without undue gripping. AJS. | ||
