RECEIVED 6 DEC 1912 Wormald Minutes of the 127th Meeting of the Technical Committee Time of meeting 2-30 p.m. December 5th 1912 Present:- Messrs Nadin (Chairman) Platford, Wormald Bailey and Barrington. XS22 1. Re Noisy Side Shafts in Standard Gear Boxes. Mr Wormald called this meeting to consider the question of unit testing for gear boxes. Mr Johnson had asked Mr Wormald :- 'why should not the unit system of testing be introduced, by which gear boxes would not be fitted to chassis until satisfactory' (CJ7/C31212). Mr Nadin explained to the Committee that the matter had been raised by Mr Royce stating that 'every side shaft can be made equal to the better ones', and by Mr Platford's suggestion that the question of unit testing for gear boxes should be tackled immediately and in earnest. The difficulty that had been experienced with the previous rig which had been tried, had been that the rig was too noisy and it did not reproduce the conditions under which the gear box is run when fitted to the chassis. The gear box Department had been quite unable to pick out and cure the faults of our gear boxes when running on this rig. Mr Wormald had suggested it was necessary to reproduce almost exactly the conditions obtained on the chassis. Mr Nadin suggested to the Committee that we should set aside a chassis complete, and run it continuously on a dynamometer for the sole purpose of passing gear boxes. Mr Barrington was of the opinion that this involved an unnecessary expense as regards tyres etc, and that it was quite unnecessary to allot a dynamometer for this purpose. | ||
