2. Mr Nadin pointed out that it would be a cheaper scheme than our present procedure. Mr Wormald pointed out that a complete chassis on the dynamometer would help us but little and would merely transfer the labour and cost from the Test Dept. to the Works. He would prefer a rig to be set up which was built exactly like a chassis, using the engine to give the variable speed, but with some scheme for rapidly erecting and dismantling gear boxes. Mr Barrington suggested that a dummy chassis should be erected in some place suitable to Mr Wormald's purpose, and consisting merely of the frame supported in some suitable manner and fitted with an engine and the gear box and undershields etc. to be tested; the fact of the axle not being fitted would render the dismantlement of the gear box a convenient and easy matter. This could be erected immediately. After some discussion the Committee agreed that this should be put in hand, Mr Bailey directing Mr Moon as regards what instructions should be issued for its erection. The Committee then discussed what could be done as regards improving our side shafts. Mr Nadin proposed that the oil pump suggested by Mr Royce should be preceeded with at once. Mr Bailey informed the Committee that he already had the job in hand and hoped to issue instructions shortly. He had previously designed an oil pump for the gear box but had been dissatisfied with it, and Mr Royce had not at that time been in favour of the idea of fitting a pump to the gear box. Mr Wormald pointed out to the Committee that we were not at all sure that the oil pump would clear us of all our trouble with side shafts, but he thought the matter should be put that the running rig would enable us to | ||
