RE. OVEROILING. X4224 √4225

With reference to overoiling, we cannot under-stand why the bevel on the lower scraper ring should be advantageous from an overoiling point of view. We can understand however that it would increase the unit pres-sure of the ring on the cylinder walls by simply reduc-ing the area of the surface in contact with the cylinder walls, in which case it would'nt matter whether the bevel was on the upper or lower side, and could we think be proved to be more efficient when it is on the upper side of the ring. It would also suggest that if the ring could be kept at it's present narrow width and made to give heavier pressure on the cylinder walls by more elas-ticity or depth, the amount of oil passing the ring would be less. Experiments verifying these views, or otherwise, should be made.
