X-4204 RE. NEW FRICTION DEVICE TO FRONT STEERING PIVOT.
AND NECESSARY END PLAY.
In fitting the above we have found that the pivot pin should have ample vertical end play, as we find that this is considerably affected by the expansion of the fibre friction washer, caused by moisture.
According to the present drawings this vertical end play has a minimum of .016" and a maximum of .025".
We find that the fibre washer itself when immersed in water, and allowed to expand, increases its thickness by .074". It is therefore important that this point should receive consideration when finally instructing the fitting of this washer as standard.
Please let us have a copy of your instructions on this matter so that we can arrange for our instructions to Depots accordingly.
The quality of the fibre seems very spongy and absorbent.
Care shpuld also be taken in machining these washers to ensure full surface contact where the friction takes place.
