'KESTREL' ENGINES.

TESTS WITH MODIFIED CYLINDER LINERS & COPPER JOINT RINGS.

As requested in Rg{Mr Rowledge}/Tan.1/BM.3.3.32., we have recently carried out a test on various types of liner for Kestrel engines with a view to improving the standard liner as regards distortion and piston bedding. Four types of liner were tried, being of the following types :-

(1) Standard Liners E.30298/9.

(2) Ex.8012 having a taper panel in lower half, Std. dia. trunk and semi-circular rubber ring groove.

(3) Ex.7890 having similar modifications to Ex.8012 but with the trunk dia. increased by .075".

(4) Ex.8013 - a standard type liner with the trunk dia. increased by .075".

These features are shewn diagrammatically in the appended sketch.

Copper top joint rings were fitted in place of the standard forged aluminium type.

CONDITIONS OF TEST.

Engine - Kestrel 11 MS. 93.
Pistons - E.37728 ground to Ex.7466 i.e. oval and slightly barrelled above gudgeon pin.
Fuel - D.T.D.134 except for full throttle running, when D.T.D.134 plus 3 cc's. TEL. was used.

A two hours endurance test - normally cooled - under standard conditions was carried out viz:

1 hr. 55 mins. at 472 BHP. - 2250 RPM.
4 mins. at 525 BHP. - 2250 RPM.
1 min. at F.T. - 2250 RPM.

Cont'd.........
