Ps. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} Ps7/IL23.2.28. X.8783do. X.8780. 8660 Chassis 93-LF. Complaint of inefficiency of dynamo. We have a customer who has complained to us of the inefficiency of our dynamo for his service: He uses the car only for long journeys, such as Paris-Barcelona, etc. and uses a runabout when in town. He states that he often drives through the night and uses his headlamps considerably. As this permits him to travel at high speeds, he does not get the full advantage of the dynamo and complains that after 3 or 4 hours of night driving the lights fail. I have examined the car and accessories and find that he has 75 c.p. bulbs in the head lamps consuming 10 amp., a spot light which consumes 4 amp. He therefore discharges at 11 amps. without spotlight, or 17 amps. with it. The output of the dynamo is approximately 3 amp. at the speed he runs at, giving him a nett discharge, when only headlamps are on, of 7 amps. Travelling at these high speeds naturally means using the Klaxon considerably. He asks us if another dynamo could be fitted with a maximum output at 80 to 100 kms per hour, or is it possible to modify the present dynamo to give this. On the other hand he suggests a supplementary dynamo which I think is to be avoided, even if it were possible, and the fitting of a second battery does not alter matters because the discharge is greater than the charge. Will you kindly write me immediately you have thought over this matter with your recommendation as to the best means of overcoming the difficulty. Ps. | ||
