Rolls-Royce Limited, DERBY Your ref: Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GR.{George Ratcliffe}6/JH Dear Sirs, We thank you for your letter of the 17th instant, reference as above, and also for the sample of brass turnings that were found in the pump piston. We are absolutely unable to account for the presence of this, because after examining every pump part we have in stock, even those raw, we have not been able to find any similar swarf. We are therefore unable to explain the presence of same, but if it was due to negligence on our part in the first place, we can only apologise. In view of the care we take in cleaning the parts after each operation and the fact that the carburetters are assembled a long way from the machine shop, we are afraid we cannot offer any other explanation.
