Vauxhall Motors Ltd CONTRACTORS TO THE ADMIRALTY, WAR OFFICE & AIR MINISTRY. LUTON. BEDS. TELEPHONE NUMBER 2600 LUTON. TELEGRAMS CARVAUX. TELEX. LUTON WHEN REPLYING PLEASE QUOTE OUR REF: 229/HJM/MS. YOUR REF: RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}3/MH.{M. Huckerby} 1st April, 1938. Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd., DERBY. Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr. S. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Grylls. Our Mr. Taub has passed on your letter concerning our new engine oil specifications to the writer for reply. Enclosed please find a copy of our specification L.14 which gives details of our engine oil lubricants required for use under three specified conditions of general air temperatures. You will note that the VIS 20 grade covers our requirements - summer and winter - in this country. I do not think you should have any difficulty in persuading any oil company to work to our 20 or 30 grade - whichever suits your engine - since we have given approvals to probably twenty or thirty oil companies who market those grades. Moreover, Wakefield, Vacuum and Price - to name only three of the largest distributors-also number their grades to our specifications. I understand that viscosity grading by numbers is being seriously considered by the B.S.I. and with the adoption of numbers in your Rolls instruction book to indicate lubrication requirements, this should still further advance that scheme. I am also enclosing a list of the better known and distributed oils which conform to our VIS 10, 20 and 30 specifications, for your information. Yours faithfully, for VAUXHALL MOTORS LTD.
