X.26286. RE REAR SPRINGS. X.4056.

We send herewith a print of "N" Scheme 333 shewing the proposed new type of rear spring with more leaves and nearly square ends. We have been a little longer than we anticipated over this, but we found a certain amount of difficulty in designing the clips.

The suggestions for the latter are shewn on "N" Scheme 334.

We had Mr Woodhead over yesterday and discussed these and the present springs with him. He was very amicable and agreed practically to do almost anything we liked. One curious thing was that he prefers the solid eye to the rolled eye saying that he can do it more easily and as cheaply as the rolled eye, because of the special plant they have put down.

We have therefore shewn this type of eye because we supposed that you would prefer this if the question of cost were not in it. X.682 Mr Woodhead has agreed to grinding the plates all over and keeping them flat, and to bending them on to the same curvature so that there is little nip in the upper plates, or pull in the bottom plate. In connection with this Mr Hives will probably report to you that we have here a pair of thick leave springs, which were those originally designed and fitted to 7CA. These springs have slightly broader ends than the present with chamfered edges, and are made so that the plates have the same curvature throughout. It is understood that these
