With reference to the bumping test of the complete steering gear, this test was in accordance with an instruction at present in the post.

The steering box was being modified, but the point that broke had received no attention. We find that it needs attention, and have made the necessary alterations, which we are sending to Mr. Day.

The test is excellent, but we are short of one point before we can judge the importance of the breakage, and that is, was the particular car on which this test was made fitted with wheels having the near centre, or far centre steering ?

If it took place with an axle with centre point steering then it should be repeated on an axle with our old standard steering. If, however, it was our old standard, then it should be repeated with the centre point steering.

The result may be somewhat modified if the steering wheel is held by a light wood lever with rubber or spring connections between the ends of the lever and the chassis, which would more nearly resemble the arms of a man holding the steering wheel.

There may also be some modification due to the different springs in the longitudinal steering tube.
