To CJ. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} -2- R4/G17/11/20 Contd. X.4231/2 - Pump circulation for water cooling. Oil pump, dynamo and water pump driven from } camshaft or camshaft gear wheel. X.4250✔ - Such a small engine permits of a starter motor X.4275✔ - of a small size, and only a single train of gear, and the shaft with spiral keys. No governor. X.4228✔ - Present R.R. 40/50 H.P. carburettor reduced in scale to save time. We know nothing we can purchase to do the work in the way we want it done. X.4244✔ - The clutch will be multiple plate, but direct operated like the Northcliffe clutch, and not like the "Goshawk" clutch which is lever operated, and is considered too expensive. X.4247✔ - Three speed gear box carried on rear of engine. (Gear box will be similar to Goshawk, but modified for three speeds.) X.4253✔ - Central change gear and brake levers. X.4256/7✔ - The back axle to be generally of the "Goshawk" type, X.4258✔ - but lighter and simpler. It will have - (a) Central gearbox of cast aluminium split longitudinally as on "Goshawk". (b) Taper steel axle tubes of rather small diameter. (c) Tie rod underneath. (d) Double rear brakes. (e) Fabric disc couplings at each end of propeller shaft drive from change speed gear box. X.4262✔ - (f) Parallel control by semi-elliptic rear springs, the springs to be very long for the purpose of obtaining stiff spring leaves which will carry the brake torque and propulsive torque of the axle. X.4263✔ - Front axle to be like "Goshawk". X.4229✔ X.4320✔ - The "Goshawk" will be a model of the external appearance of this chassis. X.4241 X.4256 X.4262 X.4225✔ - (5) We shall offer to the Works and Sales, only one variety of engine to the dimensions given above, which will be of the push rod type having aluminium crankchamber, cast iron cylinder block, and cast iron detachable head. (6) We shall offer to the Sales and Works two methods of building the chassis behind the dash, the simpler and less ex- (Contd.) | ||
