To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} & BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} From RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} xvrsa RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}1/BE24.11.33. 1-B-IV. REAR AXLE The following is a report on the condition of the above axle when stripped for examination after approximately 16,000 miles running in France. Mobiloil E.P. Oil was used throughout the test. Crown Wheel Pinion Condition good. Oil return holes in crown wheel bearing housing blocked with deposit from lubricating oil. Pinion Bearing. New Departure. G.54269. End float increased from .0005 to .002 and ball track badly pitted. Owing to the large radius on the outer race of this bearing the area of contact with the oil retainer GB.614 is reduced to a narrow band not more than .062" wide, which seems hardly sufficient considering that this face takes the pinion thrust. Centre Casing Outer races of pinion and crown wheel roller bearings have been rotating and are .007" slack in housings. Differential General condition poor. All bearing surfaces appear to have been starved of oil due to gradual accumulation of thick sediment choking oil passages to bushes and thrust faces. Wear has taken place as follows:- Axle Shaft Bushes G.100135. N.S. .008" O.S. .004" in bore All Pinion Bushes GB.586 .003 in bore. Trunnion GB.605. .0015 on each bearing. Axle Shaft Adjusting Washers N.S. .014 O.S. .004. | ||
