Oy2/DM.{D. Munro}22.5.30 -2- ---------------- Evidently leakage has not occurred simply due to over-filling of axle, but occurs continuously. Am told this is quite unusual. Is it possibly due to an eccentric oil-retainer? Gears. Ap.17. (B) "While the rear axle always had a slight hum, yet this did not become worse during the running done here." May 8. "Maintenance now suggest that the hum at 30 m.p.h. is getting worse. They are now carrying out the work as laid out in Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs}158, which has just arrived." "Later: Teeth of ring gear were examined by wiping off and looking through small cover at the back and showed excellent condition bedding right across tooth, well polished, but no sign of picking up. "Backlash so far as could be judged was normal - axle was not washed out, or removed from car." The pinion was evidently not examined. Before leaving I had noticed an apparent slight growth of axle-hum not noticed when car was first run. Thinking this might be an effect of the very cold weather we were having, I asked them to wathh it and report later. Since the development of noise is evidently slight I think they did right to leave well enough alone. (4) Propeller Shaft. Ap.17. "There was considerable leakage of oil from the rear gearbox bearing and front universal joint. This was so bad that the whole underside of the coachwork behind the gearbox, and all chassis parts, crossmembers, etc. were covered with a film of oil on the front side, and dry on the rear side." May 8. "It is not possible to say whether the oil came from the universal or the sliding joint - I should fancy the latter as the whole front end of the propeller shaft is covered with oil." "Later: We notice now oil exuding from between the joint faces of both universal joint rings, the rear one being the worse." cont'd.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} | ||
