To Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/FD.{Frank Dodd - Bodies}5/KW.1.1.35. Re Visit to Kingsbury. The writer visited Kingsbury on Friday last in connection with the report that a batch of Bentley axle control eye bolts had been passed through test minus the annular oil groove. The omission of this annular groove has been to cut off the oil supply to the bronze bushes on the ends of the anchorage spindles, causing excessive wear and blackness in the axle control. On B-162-AH, Rippon's Bentley, both axle controls were reported very black, and an examination showed that the annular oil grooves were missing in the eye bolts. At Kingsbury 7 axles were examined and 13 sets of parts from stock. B-140-AH - Both anchorage spindles were found to be worn and dry, the eye bolts being minus the oil grooves. B-168-AH - As these chassis were in the same series we were under the impression that the faulty batch of eye bolts was confined to the one series, but in the case of B-168-AH this is not so. On one side the control anchorage was O.K. the other side was minus the annular oil groove in the eye bolt. This axle was modified by Kingsbury on Sept. 12th with parts supplied by Derby via Lillie Hall on 31.8.34. The new parts were spindles and 7/16" dia. eye bolts replacing 3/8" bolts. This rather goes to show that we are not confined to one series when looking out for the faulty parts. In the process of testing 13 sets of stock anchorage parts we found in one case that while the annular oil groove was in the eye bolt, the oil hole in the spindle was missing. These parts were brought back to Derby. A second case of the hole being missing in the spindle was found on B-140-AH chassis. | ||
