By RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} at Chateauroux. re 31-EX. Phantom 3. Referring to GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}8/JAB, this is to confirm that you will send out to Chateauroux some sets of oilite bushes to N.Sch.4653. These bushes are taken from the standard oilite list and are .625" diameter on the outside, whereas the hole for the needle bearings on the axle is .634". This difference in diameter could be made up by a piece of foil .004" thick wrapped round the outside of the bushes to avoid having to send and fix new brake carrier plates. Personally I have very little faith in being able to prevent needle bearings from rusting up at this point, and the policy of adding bijur lubrication seems to me to be going the wrong way from the point of view of complication, whereas the oilite bush might bequite satisfactory, and it is under these very conditions that we want to test it. If you are still very keen to try the felt enclosed needle roller the best plan would be to use this on one side of the axle and the oilite bushes on the other side. In view of the conditions of operation it would be better for the spindle to be in stainless steel and the end caps in bronze as on N.Sch.4653. Enc. Blueprint of N.Sch.4653 to GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}'s copy. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} | ||
