X 4057 To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}5/KT.17.2.33. Re. PEREGRINE. Replying to Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}6/D.15.2.33. The Peregrine car which is at present running in France is the car which Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} ran from Grantham to Biggleswade and represents the standard Peregrine except for steering, carburetter and induction pipe. The material is all on order to that specification. The modifications to the propeller shaft contained in Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}1/11.2.33. means a new gearbox casting and other extensive alterations as well as a number of untried features for it. We are not considering these on the first Peregrine cars. The boom which was very definite on that car has been reported by GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} to be chiefly due to an additional damper which was fitted on to the propeller shaft, and which has been found unnecessary and since been removed. He still reports an exhaust boom at 50 M.P.H. but we expect to hear from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} when he returns what degree this is. The starting from cold we have not treated as very serious, because we know that the carburetter on there is not the one we intend to use. The exhaust down pipe cracked at the welded joint. We are obtaining more particulars of this, but any alteration which is found necessary should not affect the material on order. The loss of water 1 1/4 pts/day. This is being looked into but we think it may be found due to the fact that they filled the radiator too full. The loss of oil from various joints is being looked over, but we do not expect any modifications to affect the material. The leaks were caused by the filter in the crankcase breather becoming choked, the final scheme was not on this car. Re. Oil Temperature. We have suggested several tests which are being carried out at the moment. We believe this fault will be overcome without any radical alterations. Gearbox. The reverse gear on this car is no different to any others. We cannot reproduce the fault | ||
