( 4 ) 3) CLUTCH WITH FABRIC ON DRIVEN MEMBER. TO N.SCH 3948 SPECIAL SPRING CENTRE TO ELIMINATE OVER-RUN RATTLES WITHOUT THE NECESSITY FOR PROPELLER SHAFT FLYWHEEL DAMPER. The Clutch was smooth in engagement and no sign of slipping. The centre lugs for the driving springs broke off after 2272 miles, the Car having to be towed back to the garage. The material had fatigued. There has been no over-run rattle from the transmission. The test with the propeller shaft damper taken off had not been completed. A new Clutch with fabric on the driven member but with a solid centre was fitted. This Clutch has been smooth in engagement and free from over-run rattles in the transmission. There has been no sign of slipping with normal use. in acceleration tests however starting in second gear severe slipping took place. 4) NARROW PIN CRANKSHAFT. With the exception of noticeable periods no trouble has been experienced with this shaft. At maximum speeds oil temperatures of 120°c has been reached. 5) NARROW PIN DRILLED UP CONNECTING RODS WITH STRIP LEAD BRONZE BEARINGS. There has been no failure of the bearings. The condition when examined at 5,500 miles was as follows:- TOP HALF. 1 Surface of metal dull but smooth & free from pitting 2 Pitted at top of the arch but shows no cracks between the pits 3 Same as N° I 4 General surface smooth & bright one large pit. 5 Pitted over 60% of surface some of the pits running into one another. Worst of the lot. 6 Surface good only occasional small pit. BOTTOM HALF. 1 Same as top half 2 Slight pitting of surface generally 3 Surface dull, small patch of roughness; 4 Surface good smooth fairly bright. one grit score along centre line 5 Surface dull inclined to be rough especially on the Compression side. 6 Surface smooth light pitting in the centre. 6) TAXOLITE TIMING GEARS. GROUND STEEL GEARS. The gears have given no trouble. They are good for absence of noise. There is no rattle. ................ | ||
