X.3569: RE BRAKE GEAR - "GOSHAWK".

In reply to your recent memo concerning the above, would you kindly note that Mr. Royce has examined your schemes of the brake gear, N. scheme 121 in particular, which is the general arrangement. He does not like going forward and then back again with the motion of the hand brake, and would like you to modify the scheme along the lines already indicated with the compensating shafts one on either side of the cross member, opposite to the front end of the rear springs.

These shafts can be so low that they almost touch the propeller shaft tube with the latter in its highest position. The brake levers and differential casings will not, of course, be opposite to the axle, and will therefore not foul.

With regard to the pedals and pedal levers, the brake pedal should be directly opposite to the steering column.

A general scheme for the "Buzzard" and "Vulture" pedal mechanism has been prepared down here and Mr. Royce would like you to examine this and apply it as far as possible to the "Goshawk". The number of this scheme is LeC.1207.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
