ELECTRIC WINDSCREEN WIPERS.

As a result of our criticisms of the existing Klaxon windscreen wiper, Messrs Klaxon Ltd. have submitted two further experimental samples for test. One of these had a shunt wound motor similar to the Lucas, and the other a modified series wound motor.

Our tests shewed that the modified series wound motor took less current, gave 60% more torque, and produced a smaller temperature rise than the shunt wound motor. The running current was only .8 amperes in excess of that taken by the Lucas type R.W. wiper which is shunt wound.

The points in favour of a shunt wound machine are that -

(a) The speed of the wipers is kept more or less constant with variations of load on the screens.

(b) The current consumption is less but against the shunt wound machine is the fact that it is more easily stalled.

There does not appear to be much variation, however, in the wiper speeds with load with the experimental series wound Klaxon wiper.

The shunt wound Klaxon submitted is, we consider, under geared and would operate more efficiently if the gear ratio from the wiper to motor was increased.

Our conclusions are, therefore, that the modified Klaxon wiper is a considerably much better proposition than the existing model, and we have arranged with Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey} for the wiper to be fitted to an expl. chassis for further test.
