Mr. Royce points out that in trying this car a few days ago the change gear mechanism gave a very bad impressionin that its levers seemed to stick in the neutral position until excessive force had been applied, causing bad and uncomfortable gear changing.

When we instructed the plunger mechanism on Lec. 1908. we shewed two depths of plunger grooves in sliders, to be tried.

We are under the impression that on some previous occasion when a car came to WW. having the particular mechanism referred to, and also exhibiting the same fault, that we mentioned to you the two depths of groove for trial.

Are we to take it that the gearbox on this underframe car tried by R.{Sir Henry Royce} a few days ago had the shallow groove, in which case they still require modification, or was the car fitted with a box having deep groove sliders. In the case of the former will you please still further lessen the spring load and slot depths, until reasonable plunger action is assured without undue gripping.
