Re: CHASSIS 3.AZ.20 - CONTINENTAL TRIALS CAR
Re-occurrence of steering wobble.

With reference to Sr.'s telephone conversation with you concerning the above, the following is our report:

On the 29.9.36, we fitted a set of ball pads and special washers to Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}I30 and I32. The car had then covered 8000 Kms. The initial load on each ball pin was from 3 to 4 lbs.

Since the above date, the car has covered a further 9281 Kms. Sr. has informed us that, before he left for the South of France, he thought that the steering was not as good as it had previously been and that it had gradually got worse.

We have now checked the load on each ball pin and find it to be:

O/S STEERING TUBE.
Inner ball pin: 1 3/4 lbs. Outer ball pin: 2 lbs.

N/S STEERING TUBE.
Inner ball pin: 2 lbs. Outer ball pin: 2 1/2 lbs.

At the time Sr. Mentioned that the steering was not as good as it had been, the car had covered a total mileage of about 13.000 Kms. It therefore appears that, after the fitting of the modified type ball pads, the load on the ball pins began to decrease after the car had covered about 5000 Kms.

We find that the lower ball pads have been rotating on the shoulder which supports them in the cross steering tube joints, causing a little wear on the shoulder of the joint.
