NITROGEN PROCESS. Since you very kindly assisted in getting details of the nitrogen process of hardening steel, we have had some samples submitted by Firth Derihon of Sheffield who are the licencees in this country for the process. The results obtained on these test pieces are quite hopeless and we consider it is because Messrs. Firths, as yet, do not know how to make the steel. In order to convince ourselves of the possibilities of this process it would be of inestimable value if you could obtain from Messrs. Aubert & Duval of Paris some small samples in the form of tappets and push rods, or if these are not available, some 1/2" bars, so that we can see the real product should be like. Mon. Duval took me over the whole of their plant and expressed willingness to do anything in his power to assist us in testing out the steel. We should, of course, pay for the samples.
