Your Ref: RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/WYM{G. Harold Whyman - Experimental Manager}/14./JH. July 4th.1939. Messrs Rolls-Royce Limited. Experimental Department. DERBY. Dear Sirs, We have to acknowledge receipt of yours of the 30th ult; respecting sample Air Intake Silencer for your 25/30 H.P.Car. In reply we have pleasure in advising you that this sample is being despatched to you by post to-night, and would point out that we are sending with this silencer, a selection of 6 varying sizes of hiss gaps, in order that you may experiment with these, in the hope that you will be able to reduce the small amount of hiss which was apparent when we last heard this car at our works. After determining the most satisfactory hiss gap, we would suggest that you arrange to carry out tests with a complete silencer for restriction, due to the fact that the dimension between the top of the hiss gap and the lid{A. J. Lidsey}, will vary with the different sizes. After you have had an opportunity of carrying out these tests, we shall be pleased to receive your report. Yours faithfully.
