ENGLISH RACING AUTOMOBILES Lᵀᴰ BOURNE LINCS TELEPHONE BOURNE 121 DIRECTORS H.W. COOK, RAYMOND MAYS, PETER BERTHON OUR REF. PB/JB. DATE 26th October, 1937. Handwritten: 1020a SG{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} file MANUFACTURERS OF "E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} R.{Sir Henry Royce} A.{Mr Adams}" RACING CARS MURRAY JAMIESON SUPERCHARGERS AUTOMOBILE RESEARCH ENGINEERS E.R.A. CARS ARE DRIVEN BY STAFF ONLY AT CUSTOMERS' OWN RISK Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. Dear Sirs, For the attention of W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham, Esq. We have now had an opportunity of testing out your aluminium tin alloy. So far tests have been confined to big end bearings and as yet we have obtained no results with this material when used for main bearings. As big end bearings we have found this material to be extremely satisfactory, and although the time running has been relatively short, it has shown quite conclusively that this material is far superior than anything we have tried from a load carrying point of view. We find that there is a considerable tendency to surface score, and from this point of view the material seems to be very much more sensitive to small particles of dirt. We have assumed that this can be overcome by improving the oil filtering conditions, and this work we are at the moment carrying out with a view to running a further test. In the meantime we should very much like to know if you would be prepared to let us have sufficient material to cover our racing requirements for next season, and since it appears to stand up so satisfactory under our particular conditions, we consider it the obvious solution to our bearing problems in the future. Yours faithfully, ENGLISH RACING AUTOMOBILES LTD. [Signature] Director. AND AT BROOKLANDS TRACK, WEYBRIDGE, SURREY | ||
