To PN.{Mr Northey} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} c. EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}/Cgh.{W Clough} x411 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/AD7.8.31. CHASSIS NO. GXO-69. HUTTON. With reference to PN{Mr Northey}5/WT29.7.31 it is a fact that to make the alteration suggested in Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}4/MJ22.7.31 it would be necessary to have the car back at the Works. When we made the suggestion we had this in mind. We have gone further into the question with the D.O. and they consider that the alteration is not difficult. The reason that we suggested this rather sweeping modification was because we understood that Mr. Hutton had suffered repeated troubles with his exhaust system. Our own experience on our 10,000 mile tests has been that until we fitted the system recommended in our memo, we were never free from trouble when running in France. If the alteration is carried out to Mr. Hutton's car it would be available for any other similar exceptional case in the same way that the modification we made to Thistlethwait's brakes have proved useful for other people. Naturally, if the manifold which has been fitted to GXO-69 does not give further trouble, necessity for alteration will not arise.
