Replying to HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}5/LG9328., the trouble of the elusive knock due to the flexing of the rear end of the frame is not new, or peculiar to this type of luggage grid and spare wheel carrier. It is liable to occur when luggage is carried on the standard luggage carrier, and there is already a means of dealing with it. We will make sure that the point is handled by the coachbuilders. With reference to HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/ACL/LG9328. - report on the spare wheel carrier - we are under the impression that some of the information contained should have been conveyed to us before the gear was standardised, or at any rate before the present time. We were well aware some time ago of the difficulty of getting at the nut, but imagined that we were over-fastidious as no complaints had reached us. We can send you a bolt which will be more accessible without materially altering the present arrangement, and this we will do in the course of a post or two. With regard to the question of reverting to the 20HP. type, namely, a set screw screwing into a fixed point with allowance for the vertical movement of the wheel made in the cover plates, R.{Sir Henry Royce} up to the present has been opposed to this change. It is our intention however to revive it when we send the EAC. 10. scheme along in the course of a few days, and we think then that the opportunity will arise to raise the whole question in connection with the Phantom carrier.
