SHOCK DAMPERS 18.G.IV.

We are sending you four new valves without holes, and a range of washers for putting under the valves, which adjust the leak. We find this is the best method for giving a leak in the dampers.

We should like you first to fit the new valves and set the dampers to 75 lbs. back and front, then put a .025" thick washer under the valves of the rear dampers and .020" for the front dampers. It is not necessary to have as large a leak on the front owing to the shorter front levers on the dampers.

Our impression is that raising the valve off its seat by washers gives a far better ride than drilling holes in the valve. This we presume is because it reduces the poppet valve effect.

We have had to instruct settings for these dampers on production. We have instructed that the first 100 chassis are to be set exactly similar to 18.G.IV. setting when the car left England. As 18.G.IV. settings were arrived at after very little development work, we are hoping that this setting can be improved.

We are sending you a radiator thermostat made by The Packless Gland Co. We are very keen to use these on production if they are satisfactory. We have done no tests on this thermostat, so should like you to give us the temperature of operation.
