Your letter of October 15 is received, and we are surprised to learn of the scoring troubles you are having with hypoids.

It is most unusual in view of the small proportional pinion offset when proportional offsets two to three times as great are operating in quantities and scoring is a very rare thing.

If the gears and pinions are hard to file and are well mounted with good lubrication, your gears should operate entirely free from trouble. We feel there may be some one factor, aside from the method of hardening the pinion, that has escaped attention and we have accordingly instructed our Mr. Gray to visit you and thoroughly investigate the trouble from every angle.

Mr. Gray is, of course, thoroughly conversant with hypoid manufacture and the standards of hardness we maintain, and it is quite probable he will locate the cause of these failures.

We enclose copy of the heat treatment specifications we use on 5% nickel, double quenched pinions. There are no jigs used in quenching the pinion but we do handle each pinion separately and quenching it with its axis vertically to obtain a uniform quench.

Mr. Gray will visit you within three weeks, and we believe the combination of your forces and our representative will readily find the trouble.
