Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} X2066. BY5/J.18.11.30. Picking up of Hypoid Gears. We took up the above matter direct with the Gleason Works, and we attach hereto copy of their reply. They are referring the matter, as we anticipated they would, to Mr.Gray who will undoubtedly in the near future be coming over to discuss the matter with us personally. It is necessary for us to have a number of pairs of gears which show this trouble available, so that Mr.Gray will be able to see exactly what the trouble is. The gears produced by the Gleason Company are given double heat treatment as follows:- 1/- Carburise at 900 to 925°C. 2/- Quench in oil direct from the carburising box. 3/- Re heat treat to 780°C. 4/- Quench in oil. We have made an attempt to put this treatment into practice, but have not been successful up to the moment owing to troubles with distortion. We are still continuing experiments in this direction and would doubtless learn more about this when Mr.Gray visits us. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} [STAMP: RECEIVED 1930 NOV 19] | ||
