To KJP. from EFC.

EFC1/T8.5.24.

I have received the enclosed letter which was so distinctly addressed to me that I opened it without hesitation, and destroyed the envelope, as I often do, before reading the letter.

I cannot quite weigh it up. I do know a man named McNeil, but I [strikethrough]cannot be certain that[/strikethrough] am in doubt whether the writer is he.

You may know of the name and case, and the letter may have been addressed to me purely in error. If, however, you cannot fix the writer, it might be better for you not to know anything about it and for me to answer the letter, enquiring if the writer is my friend and stating that I cannot help him as I do not deal with these matters. I should have expected my friend to have included some personal remarks or enquiries. In any case, I have judged that it is desirable for you to see the letter in the first instance, as you may know something about it.
