X.4283 - C.A.V. WILLARD THREAD RUBBER BATTERY.

We have now received three sample batteries of this type from the C.A.V. Company. Two of these are of the 12 XR3 type and the other of the 12 XR2. One of the large ones and the small one are being put through our series of battery tests. These batteries have cell to cell connections which are apparently good but perhaps a little light. We have noticed on the high rate discharge that one or two of these become sensibly heated.

The top of the battery is of clean design and will not readily collect dirt and dust. The terminals are of the clip and bolt up type with a socket provided for sweating the cable. We are notsure if we care for this type of terminal, one reason being that if the battery is taken off for an extra charge there is inconvenient means of making the charging circuit connections to the battery. The standard terminals we have on the Exide batteries, used with a cable lug such as we have as standard, appear to be really more serviceable. The acid sprays through the holes in the vent plugs to a slight extent during charge. Very few vent plugs prevent this entirely, but the Exide are very good in this respect.

We should like to hear from you as to what type of terminal you favour. We can then put it up to the C.A.V. Co.
