from the lighting system in series with one of the incandescent lights of the garage. If, however, the lighting of the garage is done by an alternating current, it is necessary to have a rotary rectifier.

X.3778 It has occurred to me that Mr. Clark should continue his tests with regard to the effects of rise of temperature on the cutting in speed, and if it is concluded that our present dynamo is really too late in cutting in, I suggest that we ask the Lucas people to lengthen the machine axially, say, 25% (This refers to 25% on the nett armature core length - not of the whole machine) using the same fittings and the same armature winding, and so give us the same electromotive force at 20% less speed.

I think this should be a quick way of doing it, and also it will suit the space available for the dynamo, whereas a larger diameter of machine will cause trouble by not giving enough range for changing the tightness of the belt.

X.3749 X.3763 With reference to the failure of the dynamo on 1 EX. I have not yet been able to solve this. I think the best thing would be to send a fresh dynamo. I will advise you on Monday, when I hope to have had time to ascertain the cause of failure. The Lucas switch has shewn the fault I anticipated and pointed out to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} of insufficient flexibility in the contacts, and the charging one was not making contact on the control circuit.
