There has been a general improvement in the fitting of bearings, both at the Depots and at the Works. The exclusion of a white metal bearing in No.7 main bearing is a decided improvement.

At the Kingsbury Depot an oil flow test has been established which gives a definite result as to the condition of bearings, without the necessary expense of dismantling, and is proving of extreme value.

BRAKES.

Brake squeaks and stiff brake mechanisms are still prominent. A number of cars have been fitted with the MZ linings which have so far been very successful in reducing the complaint of squeaks. It is unfortunate that the stock of MR. linings is so large that they have still to be fitted. It does not appear to be altogether a good policy to have to fit a lining with a known complaint.

Brake mechanism becoming stiff is still a complaint, although considerable attention has been paid to it. The cadmium plating of the anchorage pins was thought to have been a cure for these anchorages seizing. It has been found that they still tighten up, but not with rust or collapsing as previously. It would appear that some form of growth of the brake shoe metal is at fault. An investigation into this is being gone into. The pins for the toggles and spring holding pins which are rusting up is also receiving attention. The deletion of the holes in the rear brake drums for drainage of water is being recommended, as it is found that during washing these holes are more detriment than otherwise.

INEFFICIENCY OF SERVOS.

A new lining for the servos is being tried out with a view of its keeping a more consistent efficiency.

STEERINGS.

Rattles in the column are a complaint. This comes about through the felt washer being hammered out, allowing the metal control tube to come in contact with the metal column. A design has been completed to introduce a rubber band underneath the felt to make it more elastic. This is being tried out experimentally.
